It is often said that Americans believe that death is optional. Why is it so difficult for us to talk about something that is as certain as end of life?
Hi Jason, I think it is different for different types of people. Some people just have a fear of the unknown, and they are afraid that talking about death will bring it about (kinda like don't speak the name of the devil, I guess??). I thnk "young" people simply don't think they have to worry about dying now. Since many "old" people perceive themselves to still be "young" (such as my 78 year old father who has been fortunate all these years with very good health)the conversation about dying can be put off until the person is finally convinced the end of their life is upon them. Finally, I think the many procrastinators out there just think if they feel good today, surely they will feel good tomorrow too, so they put off planning under the assumption that they will always feel well enough to do it at some later time. Best, Lee
Thanks, Lee. You make several important observations. I have to continually remind myself that tomorrow is not a guarantee and that these important conversations are not just for my benefit, they are a gift to my family should something happen to me. I encourage you to keep trying to Begin the Conversation with your father...it will be worth it.
